So far we have covered Attitude and Character, Strengths and Weaknesses, Knowledge and vision and adding value in this series. Part 5 of how to be an inspirational leader covers communicating effectively.

There are two parts to any communication, communicating the message and listening to the message. To be an inspiring leader you need to be able to do both extremely well. If you do both well your team will be very clear about their goals and objectives.

A large portion of your time as a team leader or manager will be taken up by listening to others.  This could be in discussion with team members or hearing a report from a team member.  You need to make sure your listening skills are top notch to make sure you understand the message correctly and you don’t misinterpret the message. To help improve this you can:

  • Make sure you give the speaker your full attention, no reading emails while they are talking to you.
  • Let them finish before speaking
  • If now is not a good time ask to re-schedule the conversation later. You must stick to the rearranged time
  • Choose the best location as your desk is not always the best place
  • Make sure you re-iterate what they have told you to make sure you have understood correctly

As a communicator you need to be:

  • Very clear with all messages you are relaying
  • Ask for feedback that they have fully understood
  • Be focused on delivering the message and not distracted by other things.
  • Treat your subordinates with the intelligence they have, you should never speak down to your team
  • Sell the benefits of any large changes to obtain buy in from staff

A gifted communicator who gives clear instructions means their team will feel far more secure and confident in their job to be able to function much more effectively.  Communication can be one of the trickiest elements for a team leader and it’s important that both they and their team are fully trained on how to communicate properly and understand the benefits of clear communication.
